Key Words: Salinity, Water levels, Long tern trends, Estuarine monitoring. Monthly recorded data
Abstract: The goals of this program was to identify the spatial characteristics of water levels and salinity in the BTES and the long term trends in those levels. The trends analysis was accomplished by analyzing mean monthly water levels (at 15 stations) and mean monthly salinities (at 21 stations) from monitoring stations (from various state and federal agencies) within the BTES. The spatial analysis was conducted by comparing (using correlation, phase and coherence analysis) higher frequency data (3 hour means) from continuously recording meters at several stations within the BTES. The major results were: (1) The water levels and salinities both showed times when increases over a 5-10 year periods and times when there were decreases over a 5-10 year period. Overall, there is no generalized coast-wide increase in salinities in the open waters of the BTES over the time period that the data covered (1955-1994)
Author Quality Assurance: Data were recieved as digital files (on diskettes) from supplying agency. The data was supplied in an archieved form. Data files were un-archieved, transferred to the LSU mainframe computer, coverted to metric units, 3- hour daily, and monthly means were computed. The data were correct. There are numerous gaps in the data records (missiong values are denoted by the symbol”.”)
Current speeds were converted from the knots to cm/sec and water levels were converted from feet to cm. The water level data are not referenced to a common datum.

The data was supplied as preliminary data and the COE makes no claims as to the accuracy or validity.

Abstract: A computer based methodology for managing marsh hydrology and for assessing the effectiveness of management alternatives. The methodology consists of a data base and hydrodynamic computer model for simulating estuarine hydrology alterations both in quantity and quality. The objective of the model is to evaluate the possible changes in water salinity, water current patterns and water level variations that could result from different management plans.

Abstract: CELSS is a process based spatial simulation model. The CELSS dynamic model was constructed with the assumption that each cell could be connected to its four n, Toxicsearest neighbors neighbors by the exchange of water and suspended materials (salts, nitrogen, phosphorus and suspended organic and inorganic sediments). The buildup of land or the development of open water in a cell depends on the balance between net inputs of sediments and local organic peat deposition on one hand and outputs due to erosion and subsidence on the other. The balance of sediment inputs and outputs is critical for predicting how marsh succession and productivity are affected by natural and human activities.

Abstract: Goal: to produce a 1:100,000 scale map delineating the sub tidal oyster resource zones within the Barataria-Terrebonne estuaries.

Research strategies: interviewing local licensed oyster men and state biologists to develop a draft map, field sampling to document oyster populations for map verifications, compared five year bottom salinity data from LDWF for map verification and held public meetings to allow comment on draft map for any obvious over sites.

Results: Four oyster zones were delineated on the final map.
1.) a dry zone: where sub tidal oysters may be found when salinities increase (226,776 acres 53% water)
2.) a wet zone: where sub tidal oysters may be when salinities may be suppressed (206,391 acres 80% water)
3.) a dry-wet zone: where subtidal oysters may be consistently found due to favorable salinities (424,748 acres 61%water)
4.) a high-salinity zone: where natural oyster populations are predominantly found in intertidal and in shallow waters (310,616 acres, 90% water)

Variables to determine zones: oyster men interviews, field biologists interviews, historical LDWF bottom salinity data, oyster population structure , incidents of oyster predators and disease.
Author Quality Assurance: Data based on LDWF data proceedures for historical data collections (Monitoring Strategy Protocol for further information regarding this process)

Abstract: Goal: to develop a GIS to quantify current waste water discharges and to estimate reductions and associated costs for implementing new treatment units within the study area.
Process: the Btnep coverage was created by digitizing individual collection areas on 7.5 min quadrangles. These collection areas were drawn by hand based upon similar treatment technology and receiving stream. The boundaries were processed into a polygon coverage and attribute data attached based upon data obtained from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and interviews with the local sanitarians for each parish.

Analyses Performed: Visual photo-interpretation from 1:63,500 scale color infrared photographic transparenies from US COE's December coverage, in conjunction with reconnaissance and ground verification, to determine the different types and amounts of marsh present in the study areas with emphasis on identifying floating marshes. Imagery interpreted with a Bausch and Lomb Zoom Transfer Scope using USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle sheets as the base and mimimum mapping unit of 1 ha. For cursory examinations of the photography, we used a Bausch and Lomb stereoscope and illumination table. We drafted the interpreted images onto 1-sided matte mylar. Our final product was the accompanying atlas, included with this report of habitat overlays at a scale of 1;24,000, reflecting the status of the study area as of December 1990.
