- Description:

- Abstract:
-
During the spring and summer of 2000, coastal Louisiana experienced a record drought. This drought resulted in the dieback of several hundred thousand acres of coastal saline marshes. Although much of the impacted area has recovered, some areas remain devoid of vegetation. This data set consists of experimentation using beneficial-use dredged sediments to help build, manage, and restore brown marsh impacted areas to sustainable emergent marsh. Data includes spatial products, hydrologic measurements for use in hydrologic models, and plant collections and analyses.
- Purpose:
-
To provide data for the support of assessing the hydrologic-elevation effects on vegetative recovery, assaying the physico-chemical nature of dredge sediments, quantitatively assessing vegetation recruitment and temporal changes, and determining the effects of artificial plant establishment and nutrient introduction.

Data generated by the Brown Marsh principal investigators will be available only to the project’s other principal investigators, following the established QA/QC review, for a period of two years. After two years from the finalization of the data, it shall be made available to the public. Please contact the principal investigator for exact date of availability. It is strongly recommended that these data be directly acquired from the Brown Marsh Database Information Management System server and not indirectly through other sources which may have changed the data in some way.
- Use_Constraints:
-
Acknowledgement of the principal investigator as a data source would be appreciated in products developed from these data, and such acknowledgement as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of these data. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in mapping conventions, methodologies, data collections and computer processes over time. The principal investigator and the distributor shall not be liable for improper or incorrect use of these data, based on the description of appropriate/inappropriate uses described in this metadata document. The principal investigator and distributor make no claims as to the data’s suitability for other purposes. These data are not legal documents and are not to be used as such.

The accuracy of the attributes measured is dependent on a number of factors. Due to data collection procedures and processes, the exact accuracy is unknown. Such factors as human and equipment error, the nature of aerial distribution, calculations, and environmental conditions may have influenced the accuracy of these data.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Equipment used for experiments and data collection were maintained and regularly calibrated.
- Completeness_Report:
-
There are no known omissions in the data. However, the field work for the hydrologic and vegetative components were delayed until the second year of study; this delay resulted in an extension of eight months to provide a full growing season.

Aerial image compilation - Spatial data were acquired for the spatial analyses of pre and post treatment sites for five time periods. The 1998 DOQ and 2001 color infrared photography was obtained for the sites. Aerial photography for the three remaining time periods were flown under contract in April 2003, December 2003, and December 2004. These aerial images were scanned and georeferenced using ground control points. Using the datasets, boundaries of the sediment treatment and control sites were delineated. Once these sites were delineated, the discrete habitat types were then delineated. With these delineations and GIS software, index and metrics tables for each layer were created and exported into tabular format for further analyses.

Hydrologic activities - Site were selected and a boardwalk was installed that projected from the east end of the retention levee that intersected the tidal creek. A YSI model 600LS sonde, equipped with multi-sensors and a vented level system was installed. It was positioned in the center of the intersection between the tidal creek and a constructed opening in the north boundary levee and housed in a vertical structure consisting of a 16' treated 4x4" post. It was attached to a 2" PVC pipe that was then placed within a 3" perforated PVC pipe mounted to the post. Water temperature, specific conductance, salinity, water levels, and water depth were measured on a continuous basis; a YSI microcomputer-based datalogger was used to download the data quarterly. Data were then corrected and imported into a tabular format.

- Methodology_Description:

Vegetative/Nutrient Field study - The experimental design was created to test the three interaction effects: sediment depth to species, species to supplemental nutrients, and elevation to species to nutrients. The design incorporated several treatment variables: depth (0", 6", 9", 12"), species (Spartina alterniflora and patens, Juncus roemerianus, Distichlis spicata, and Avicennia germinans, and unplanted species), and nutrients (fertilized vs unfertilized). A split-plot design was used on the depth variable, and nested between this main plots were the subplot of species and nutrients variables (for a total of 48 treatment combinations; subplots replicated 3 times within the main plot and the main plots 2 times.) The plant material used for the experiment was obtained from a native marsh southwest of Port Fourchon during the fall of 2003 and in the winter of 2003 and spring of 2004 were placed in greenhouses. Once planting was completed, measurements were taken at 30 and 90 days post-planting. Measurements include survival, cover value, species composition, and relative abundance. For the black mangrove species, additional measurements were collected, basal diameter, height, and secondary branching. Percent cover was visually estimated using a 1/2meter squared quadrat divided into quarter quads for visual separation. Species composition and relative abundance was calculated in the lab. A clip-plot method was used to obtain samples. The clipped material was placed in plastic bags, labeled and sent back to the lab for analysis.

The following parameters were collected - for the geospatial component, delineated habitat for five time period (pre and post-treatment). For the hydrologic component, water temperature, salinity, specific conductance, water levels, and water depth were measured. For the vegetative component, percent cover, species composition, survival, and relative abundance were measured for all species in all treatments; additionally basal diameter, height, and secondary branching were measured for the A. germinans. See the cited report for further details on units of measurements.
